At the beginning of the twentieth century, Stanton Vaughn wrote a clever book of limericks titled Limerick Lyrics. Before the decade was over, at least five more editions of the book had been published — each by a different publisher. The first book, published by T. J. Carey & Co. in 1904, was 192 pages in length. Subsequent editions were truncated to 160 pages. In addition to the limericks in these books (no limericks were lost in truncation) there are a number of non-limericks, near-limericks, and quasi-limericks. A subjective analysis of these Over 700 Choice Versifications results in a limerick count of 601.
